On the former Hellmann site in Bielefeld, the parties involved met for the symbolic handover of the keys.
The structure of the new Amazon distribution center is about the size of a football field: The building at Teltower Straße 15 in Bielefeld-Oldentrup measures exactly 5,000 square meters. Together with BREMER AG, the Hagedorn Group has turned the old Hellmann site into a new commercial area covering more than two hectares in total.
The location in Bielefeld is ideally suited for commercial premises such as the Amazon distribution center, which is where parcels are delivered to customers from, due to its proximity to the Ostring and the A2 autobahn. “By establishing a new commercial location, the region and its citizens will benefit equally. The revitalization we are carrying out ensures that an industrial wasteland is turned into attractive building land”, says Rick Mädel, Managing Director of Hagedorn Revital GmbH, emphasizing once again the good cooperation with the Bielefeld city authorities. Bernd Jungholt, Managing Director of BREMER Projektentwicklung GmbH also confirms this: “We have always been able to count on the support of the Bielefeld city authorities in planning and implementing our investment in improved utilization.”
Excavators moved 9,500 tonnes of construction waste
After the logistics company Hellmann gave up its alternative location on Teltower Straße due to relocation, Hagedorn Revital GmbH took over the property in December 2017. Until Amazon moved in, the industrial wasteland was prepared for its new use. Hagedorn's dismantling and civil engineering specialists did a great job: The demolition excavators moved 9,500 tonnes of construction waste, 75 tonnes of roofing felt, 13 tonnes of artificial mineral fibers and 15 tonnes of contaminated wood waste and disposed of the materials properly. The maximum amount of waste mass is recycled at Hagedorn. This is done, for example, by processing construction waste into high-quality road construction materials.
Special faҫade provides insulation and soundproofing
The new Amazon distribution center is impressive with its length of around 78 meters, width of 60 meters and its height of 12.5 meters, about 230 parking spaces and an office and social area of around 1,000 square meters. Insulation materials are integrated in the prefabricated reinforced concrete elements with an insulated panel faҫade. This means the elements not only provide good thermal insulation but also ideal sound insulation.
The roof consists of an insulated trapezoidal steel sheet and is designed to accommodate a photovoltaic system. Furthermore, an additional canopy enables the delivery partners' delivery staff to load their vehicles protected from the weather. “We are very pleased to open a distribution center in Bielefeld that incorporates more than 20 years of logistics expertise, technological advancements and investment in transportation infrastructure. This allows Amazon to offer customers faster and more flexible delivery options,” comments David Jayaratne, site manager of the distribution center in Bielefeld.
